Discharge and pelvic inflammatory disease

This article takes a closer look at the significance of the vaginal discharge associated with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a condition that affects the reproductive system in a woman.  After a bacterial infection manages to breach the cervical barrier and reach the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries a woman will begin to experience several symptoms.

In some cases women don’t have any early symptoms of the infection while in other cases they are overwhelmed by the discomfort and pain.  Each case is individual and varies from person to person.  The infection can be cured with antibiotics, become recurrent or chronic if it isn’t eradicated from the woman’s system or can create long-term problems with infertility secondary to the scarring in the organ systems.

Some of the symptoms that women experience include pain and increased cramping with menstruation, pain with urination, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, pain with intercourse or bleeding after intercourse.  Women can also experience vaginal discharge during the entire month with PID.

This discharge and pelvic inflammatory disease is indicative of an infection.  All women experience a vaginal discharge during the month that is dependent upon hormonal fluctuations which control the vaginal and uterine environment.  Each month the body prepares for pregnancy by developing and releasing an egg, building tissue in the uterus to feed a potential baby and making the uterus and vagina a more friendly environment for sperm.

During most of the month the vaginal discharge or fluid can be thick and gelatinous which make it almost impossible for the sperm to swim through and get through the cervix to the uterus and their ultimate goal the fallopian tubes.  The woman’s body isn’t fertile and there is no need for sperm to be swimming upstream.

When a woman becomes fertile the vaginal discharge becomes thin and stringy which actually encourages the transportation of the sperm through the reproductive tract on their way to fertilization.

However, the discharge of PID resembles neither of these types of discharge.  In this case the discharge has a distinctive odor that resembles the smell of an infection.  The color is often yellow and has a thick consistency.

This discharge is a result of the infection located in the uterus or fallopian tubes and resembles discharge that would be consistent with an infection.  While the normal discharge is clear to white this is yellow or tinged with brown.

Should you be concerned and believe you may have pelvic inflammatory disease, you should consult with your physician to obtain the appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocol.  Long term effects of PID include infertility caused by the scar tissue from the infections as well as anemia caused by the heavy periods each month.  A chronic infection also cause problems with the immune system of the woman’s body and can cause other problems that don’t seem related to the PID.  As with most concerns relating to the reproductive region, this is not a condition that should be ignored.
